TRIBUTE TO ROY WOOD

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 12-02-09

Growing up as a precocious rock-addled kid in the suburbs of Chicago in the mid-‘70s, I was constantly looking for heroes who committed acts of genius on vinyl to blow my mind. One of these most potent heroes was a bloke named ROY WOOD, who in addition to being an incredibly proficient multi-multi-instrumentalist, was a brilliant songwriter and a relentless rocker. This show is dedicated to the enduring wonders of Mr. WOOD’s music and playing, in the mighty MOVE, electrifying ELO, wondrous WIZZARD, and on his complete lonesome on the neglected masterpiece that is the Boulders LP.

OUTSIDER MUSIC REDUX

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 11-25-09

I was very fortunate to have the lovely and extremely knowledgeable JELLY ROLL CHICKEN as a guest on this show, to lend her expertise in outsider music from the first half of the 20th century. My contribution goes from the last half of the 20th and the early 21st centuries, culling the curious sounds of people making music that ignores or subverts standard musical and lyrical conventions. Take the challenge and let this show of unusual and eccentric songs take you to places you can barely imagine!

REMEMBERING UNCLE MIKE AND JAKE THE INTERN

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 11-11-09

I’ve been sad to see two of the best DJs here at Pirate Cat Radio, Uncle Mike from Over The Line and Jake The Intern from White Vinyl Collection, leave Pirate Cat in the past few weeks, and I decided to dedicate this show to them. The first half will feature songs that Uncle Mike might play on his show, and the 2nd half will be songs Jake would certainly approve of. I hope they both come back someday, but for now I just want them an the Pirate Cat listening audience know that they are not forgotten…

THE INDIANA VS SF '70S UNDERGROUND SHOW

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 11-04-09

The ‘70s are often maligned as a bad decade for interesting music, but so much of what happened in the underground during that decade has been since dug up and re-examined, and now we have a different picture of a plethora of cool stuff from unlikely places. So this week I’m presenting some archaeological finds from Indiana and San Francisco of bands that had and continue to have a huge affect on me.

THE ANTI-PUNK SHOW

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 6-24-09

Continuing the non-punk trajectory of the Punk Prescription shows for June, today’s show is not just non-punk but thoroughly ANTI-PUNK. I’ve culled some of the songs and the artists from the early to mid-‘70s who made a rebellion against their music not only possible but downright necessary. Bloated, boring, self-indulgent, pretentious – these are just a few of the adjectives used to describe the music I’ll be playing, and by the end of the show hopefully you’ll be ready to start your own punk band too!

THE EXOTICA SHOW

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 6-10-09

Continuing the non-punk trajectory of the Punk Prescription shows for June, today’s show is a brief exploration into the world of Exotica. An offshoot of Easy Listening, Exotica is defined as the non-native, pseudo experience of music from Oceania, especially Hawaii. Lots of animal sounds and unusual instrumentation (including plenty of vibraphone) abound to give you the feeling that you really are in a native environment. But relax, it’s all controlled by safe studio environments right here in the U.S., and you will only be an accidental tourist for two hours…

Last week was HEAVY, this week is LITE. In anticipation of the amazing ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROUNDUP that Punk Prescription favorite LARRY JACKSON will be bringing about halfway through the show, you’ll hear some Easy Listening classics from Britain, France and Germany, mostly film and TV show themes from the swingin’ ‘60s. HEAVY, MAN! Today’s guest is a Chicago band that’s been around for over 25 years named HEAVY MENTAL. And in their honor I’ve designed a program that’s really, really heavy, although not always metal. Reaching back to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, this show culls some of my fave proto-metal noodlings from England (and some of the rest of the former British Empire) and the U.S. To paraphrase Spider Web from British crap heavies BAD NEWS, these records are so heavy that it takes 3 people to lift them off the turntable…

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 5-20-09

This show is another trip backward through my memories of the Chicago hardcore/punk scene from 25 years ago, a great formative experience for yours truly. I concur with a Pirate Radio Café patron I was rapping with last week who said that the punk scene was once about “protecting innocence.” Everybody in the scene supported each other like a family, and in a lot of ways we were a family of geeks, weirdos and misfits, clinging to each other for support and for fun. Of course it couldn’t last forever, and by the mid-‘80s our shows were being invaded by jock-punks and other testosterone junkies who brought the mindless violence in that the media had always accused us of. But before the end there were glorious shows by the likes of ARTICLES OF FAITH, NAKED RAYGUN, URGE OVERKILL and plenty of other creative powerhouses that nerds like me got to know on a first-name basis.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 5-13-09

This week I explore some of the British bands and performers who presaged the punk explosion of the late ‘70s there. Bands like the SEX PISTOLS were highly influenced by some of the outrageous antics of bands like the PRETTY THINGS and WHO, and music trends like Glam Rock, whether they like to admit it or not. A lot of the antidisestablishmentariianism extolled by punks in the ‘70s can be traced back to the freakiest hippies of the ‘60s, and hopefully you’ll be able to hear the connections.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 4-29-09

This week will be an exploration of the Rock’N’Roll Nurse’s punk rock roots in Chicago. My first Hardcore punk show was the BAD BRAINS in 1983, and it was all downhill from there, in a really good way. Along the way I put out some records, made a ton of friends, had an amazingly good time, and got a lot of cool records from the days when band’s used 7”s as calling cards. Some bands became pretty famous, most never made it out of Chicago, but the music lives on as a testament to a real cool time that I was lucky to have been a part of! In the middle I’ll be interviewing my old pal DOUGLAS WARD, who I’ve known since 1986 when I put out an EP by his then band I.D. UNDER, and who plays music to this day, now in his latest band 97-SHIKI.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 4-22-09

Punk Prescription becomes Funk Prescription yet again in a segment I like to call “Black And Blue”. It starts out with outrageous proto-rapper and incredibly influential filmmaker MELVIN VAN PEEBLES laying down the law with some tasty street rhymes, and progresses outrageously to “blue material” by the likes of “Dolemite” creator RUDY RAY MOORE, moves to unexpectedly X-rated stuff by SANFORD AND SON cast members REDD FOXX and LAWANDA PAGE, and finally peaks with genius profane stand-up by comedian RICHARD PRYOR. But just as the mothafunkin’ starts to get too much to take, obsolete tech superstar LARRY JACKSON will come in to play the most outrageous versions of the “Theme From Shaft” ever to make it to 8-track tape. (Check out the podcast for "Miss Deena's Vinyl Escapade" for Larry's stuff, which spilled into her usual time slot.) Whew!

Wherein we get back to the punk rock fray, in a historical way. This time I’ll be starting out in the ‘60s, seeking out some the origins of punk music from garage band days, in several countries and several cultures, and then making my way to the early ‘70s bit by bit. And in the middle of it all comes my interview with CHRIS BARROWS of the phenomenal PINK LINCOLNS, not to mention the JACKIE PAPERS and the SPEARS. He and I will muse about our old days in the punk scene (the ‘80s – we’re not THAT old), getting into stories about IGGY POP, GG ALLIN, MARILYN MANSON, B-52s, WHO, and BRITNEY SPEARS (!) along the way.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 4-1-09

It’s the GAY SHOW, girl! Inspired by a YouTube video of the incredible JOBRIATH sent to me by some discerning rock’n’roll friends (which were followed up by an even more wild video of KLAUS NOMI), this week’s show is dedicated to the gay performers who have made my happier, richer, and generally more fun! But hidden within the creativity and excitement is a bit of sadness with the realization that so many of these performers were some of the first high-profile victims of the horrible scourge that is AIDS. I’ve picked a few performers like JOBRIATH, KLAUS NOMI, DAN HARTMAN, SYLVESTER, FREDDIE MERCURY (of QUEEN), and JACQUES MORALI (of the VILLAGE PEOPLE) to pay particular tribute to. But I don’t forget that other performers like ELTON JOHN and GEORGE MICHAEL have made great efforts to raise money for AIDS research and to dispel the myths and stigma that the Religious Right and others have created around HIV and AIDS. So it’s April Fools’ Day – LET’S ALL BE GAY AND PARTAY!

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-25-09

This week’s show should actually be named “Funk Prescription” since it is filled with soul, funk, and reggae sounds rather than punk ones. So put on your dancing shoes and get on down to songs by the POINTER SISTERS, MARVIN GAYE, and the mighty ISLEY BROTHERS. You might be surprised at how these songs worked their way into popular American culture despite being pretty far from your typical top-40 hits. In the middle I will introduce the first ever JOHN SHAFT TASTE TEST, with versions of ISAAC HAYES’ classic “Theme From Shaft” by the likes of 101 STRINGS and POISON IDEA. Podcast listeners will be able to vote for their favorites by e-mail to rockandrollnurse@gmail.com! And come back to hear Part 2 of the JOHN SHAFT TASTE TEST, hosted by LARRY JACKSON, that promises to be way more mind-blowing than Part 1!

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-18-09

This week explores some of the New York music that influenced later NO WAVE bands, and then some of the bands that came after the height of NO WAVE that were indelibly influenced as well as being highly influential. My guest for the day is WEASEL WALTER, a chum of mine from the 2nd wave of NO WAVE situated in the Midwest in the mid-‘90s, who is a bona-fide genius and who continues to produce music that needs to be heard. He is also a contributor and wrote the foreword for the book NO WAVE by Marc Masters, a highly readable compendium of the movement that still makes waves today.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-11-09

This week is a stroll through memory lane to a genre of music called NO WAVE, starting with its origins in late-‘70s bored and penniless Manhattan and finishing with NO WAVE’s 2nd wave in mid-‘90s bored and penniless Midwest.
