PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-25-09

This week’s show should actually be named “Funk Prescription” since it is filled with soul, funk, and reggae sounds rather than punk ones. So put on your dancing shoes and get on down to songs by the POINTER SISTERS, MARVIN GAYE, and the mighty ISLEY BROTHERS. You might be surprised at how these songs worked their way into popular American culture despite being pretty far from your typical top-40 hits. In the middle I will introduce the first ever JOHN SHAFT TASTE TEST, with versions of ISAAC HAYES’ classic “Theme From Shaft” by the likes of 101 STRINGS and POISON IDEA. Podcast listeners will be able to vote for their favorites by e-mail to rockandrollnurse@gmail.com! And come back to hear Part 2 of the JOHN SHAFT TASTE TEST, hosted by LARRY JACKSON, that promises to be way more mind-blowing than Part 1!

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-18-09

This week explores some of the New York music that influenced later NO WAVE bands, and then some of the bands that came after the height of NO WAVE that were indelibly influenced as well as being highly influential. My guest for the day is WEASEL WALTER, a chum of mine from the 2nd wave of NO WAVE situated in the Midwest in the mid-‘90s, who is a bona-fide genius and who continues to produce music that needs to be heard. He is also a contributor and wrote the foreword for the book NO WAVE by Marc Masters, a highly readable compendium of the movement that still makes waves today.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION PLAYLIST 3-11-09

This week is a stroll through memory lane to a genre of music called NO WAVE, starting with its origins in late-‘70s bored and penniless Manhattan and finishing with NO WAVE’s 2nd wave in mid-‘90s bored and penniless Midwest. My guest for the day is the artistic whirlwind known as the woman who plays the character ZEEK SHECK, whose relationship with the 2nd NO WAVE is as mysterious as the story/music/performance that describes the world of ZEEK SHECK.

PUNK PRESCRIPTION Playlist 3-4-09

Because there were so many songs left over from last week, I’ve continued the theme of music that was/is available on 8-track tape on this edition of Punk Prescription, And by popular demand our special guest for the day (like last week) is Larry Jackson, local connoisseur of obsolete technologies. Sure I’m repeating myself, but isn’t that the whole idea with 8-track’s infinite loop of love?
